Displaying our program logo on all entrances to premises, shopping malls or precincts can have a powerful deterrent to potential fraudsters as well as reassurance to customers.

Just think how you'd feel if you had your credit card or cheque book stolen - your support is vital.

In 1988 the Thumbprint Signature Program was officially implemented in the US.

In 2000 it was also introduced into the UK at the Bluewater shopping complex near Dartford. Thumbs Up Security worked closely with Kent Police who quickly expanded the scheme to second hand shops and petrol forecourts.

Since that time numerous other US and UK Police Forces and retailers have expanded the scheme to partnerships in their own areas. In the UK the initiative has gained the recognition of the Home Office Crime Reduction Unit.

As the scheme is entirely voluntary there is no implications on the Human Rights Act and no administration issues for shop staff.

The presenter of a credit card, cheque or giro-cheque is simply asked to supply a thumbprint 'signature' on the reverse of the cheque or store copy of the credit card transaction slip, as positive verification of their identity. The retailer then initials the back of the cheque and thats it!

By using our low cost Touch Signature pad containing a specially developed inkless gel it will leave no mark on the users thumb. This easy process will however leave a permanent record of the identity of the actual presenter. Inaddition, the print will be clearly visible on a photocopy or microfilm of the cheque, giro-cheque or credit card receipt. This additional protection that is provided to a customer is that they can now be assured of having personalised their cheque or card in a way that a fraudster cannot.

There is no need for a database of prints and no additional storage of endorsed slips or cheques, which are processed through the banking system as normal. Security or police personnel would only obtain and use the information in the case of suspected fraudulent use and when successful prosecution is desired. When introduced into over 225 financial institutions in Texas there was virtually no public criticism of the program and this experience has also been found when introduced by ourselves into the UK. Check out some of the press information from our Links page.

If a customer declines to leave a thumbprint then it is recommended that staff ask for secondary, confirmatory identification such as another card, driving licence or similar. (offenders using 'skimmed cards' are unlikely to carry secondary identification).
